This piece was inspired by Japanese Netsuke... an ornamental carved button-like toggle that was worn with a kimono. Because of their function, they were often a "sculpture in the round", small and compact. The Mermaid series is about having fun. Mermaid Two depicts a mermaid swimming with a sea turtle.
